The old church of Aberdour probably dates from the 16th Century, although is built on the site of an earlier church and incorporates some earlier stonework. According to one source, "Its ruinous fabric is deceptive, hiding a building reputed to be one of the oldest churches in the North of Scotland." Originally it was a single room structure.

The original chapel on this site is thought to have been founded by St. Drostan around 590 A.D.
